What is Vanderbilt Trauma Bay?
The site serves as a forum for all practitioners at Vanderbilt that are involved in the care of adult trauma patients to share information, ideas and opinions. Take a moment and leave us your comments or to write us your questions. Vanderbilt Medical Center is the Level I Trauma Center for middle TN, southern KY and northern AL and serves the populace within a 56,000 square mile area. Care of the polytrauma patient is commonly utilized skill set for the clinical staff at the Vanderbilt Adult Emergency Department (ED) and Trauma Unit. Vanderbilt is consistently ranked as one of the top ten busiest centers in the United States. Trauma care is provided thru both the Medical Center and Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.

Trauma at Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt is the only Level 1 trauma center within the geographic area encompassing southern KY, middle TN and northern AL, roughly an area of >50,000 square miles. We consistently rank among the top trauma centers in the US in the area of patient outcomes and patient volume. The time from injury to highly specialized trauma care is critical in saving lives and decreasing disabilities. Vanderbilt provides a level of care that can make the difference between life and death.

  • The Adult ED has >55,000 admissions per year.   Approximately 2500 Level 1/Trauma Alert patients are evaluated per year. 
  • The Adult ED sees and average of 5 Level 1 patients per 24 hour period
  • 53% of all Level 1 patients arrive via air medical helicopter
  • Nashville Fire Department EMS brings the majority of our Level 1 ground patients
  • Vanderbilt LifeFlight brings 70% of all trauma patients delivered via helicopter/fixed wing aircraft
  • The trauma unit encompasses 31 beds both acute/subacute, with approximately 3000 admissions per year
  • The Vanderbilt Burn Unit is a 24 bed Level 1 unit and serves as the major burn referral center for TN and surrounding states.
